I Am Not a God, I Am a System Administrator (Part 1)

Good system administrator - how much deep sense is in those words. Especially for a manager who is trying to find a new candidate for such position in his beloved organization. But really, how do you recognize between good and not so good system administrator? For whatever it takes, he (system administrator) will be one of the most invisible men but also most important and powerful among company staff. It is he who is responsible for uninterruptable operations of company equipment, secretary computer, bosses MSN web page... How do you choose the right candidate to guarantee high level of service for your staff?

Let's not misguide and make a definition straight. System Administrator is absolutely NOT an "anykey" man. First one rules with servers and printers, making them operate in certain way however the second one... He also rules, in changing printer cartridges and cleaning screens (turning on PCs because "it is not working today"). Anykey man comes from an ancient time when computer was asking you to press "any key" in order to continue. And after several minutes of searching for a key named "any key" on a keyboard, help desk technician was usually called in to fix the issue.

So, to point out a factors of a good system administrator I will make some examples.

Most common management mistake: "Why should I pay a man $70K if there are a lot of people who will work for only $20K?"

Don't let the cheap price fool you. You probably won't go to buy a new iPhone for only $40 in some strange shop. You also want you Toyota to be made in Japan and Mercedes to come from Germany. The more qualified specialist, the less problems and faster solutions he will provide. Just think how much will cost you a work day when every hour something breaks. Email is not being sent, or there is no incoming call, or fax machine is not working etc. Highly qualified specialist will minimize such incidents and shorten the time down of systems.
